About Melamine Board

Melamine boards are a popular choice for a variety of different building and joinery projects. They are excellent for furniture-building, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, cabinets, shelving and even commercial shopfitting or office projects.

The Melamine-faced chipboards we supply at Harlow Bros come in various attractive colours and finishes so that you can find the perfect fit for your project. We have everything from basic, plain colours to coloured ash finishes, realistic wood finishes and veneered boards available. These are not veneered, which is a thin paper link substance; these are MFC or melamine-faced chipboard and are coated with melamine which is stronger and more durable than a veneer.

FAQs

Can Melamine Boards Be Painted?

Yes, it is possible to paint a Melamine board; however, due to their makeup, it can be a difficult task. One of the main challenges with painting melamine is that the surface is smooth and glossy due to the resin, which makes it difficult for the paint to adhere properly.

At Harlow Bros, we offer our Melamine boards in a range of stylish finishes so you can pick a design that suits your project without having to paint it, saving time on your project.

Are Melamine Sheets Waterproof?

Melamine sheets are not considered to be fully waterproof. This is because the inside of the sheet is made up of medium-density fibreboard (MDF) and then coated with a protective layer of melamine resin.

The melamine coating gives the sheets a hard, smooth surface that is resistant to stains, scratches, and heat but does not provide a complete barrier against water.

When exposed to significant water or high humidity, melamine sheets may absorb moisture and swell or delaminate. While the surface can handle small spills or splashes and wipe it clean, it is not suitable for constant exposure to water.

How Do You Cut Melamine?

Melamine can be difficult to cut, so we recommend purchasing your Melamine sheets in your preferred size when you shop with Harlow Bros. Due to fraying issues, we do not offer any custom cutting.

However, if you need to trim one of your sheets, you can do so using a fine-toothed saw. If your Melamine chips during sawing, you can use a laminate trimmer or a flush-cutting router bit to clean it up.
