A well-designed timber decking area can completely transform your outdoor space, creating a stylish, practical area for relaxing, entertaining, or dining. Whether you're going for a raised deck, a platform seating area, or a simple extension of your home, planning is key to a smooth and long-lasting result.

Step 1: Choose Your Decking Location

Start by selecting where you want your decking. Ideally, it should be in a level, accessible area that gets a good amount of sun but can also benefit from shade when needed. Consider its proximity to your house, garden features, and how it will be used, for example, for dining, lounging, or hosting guests.

Step 2: Measure and Design

Measure the space and sketch out your design. Consider the shape (square, rectangular, curved), size, and whether you'll need steps, railings, or built-in seating. This is also the time to decide whether you want raised or ground-level decking, and what style suits your garden, traditional or modern.

Use string lines and pegs to mark the layout on the ground, helping you visualise the finished area and make any adjustments before building begins.

Step 3: Choose the Right Timber

At Harlow Bros, we offer a range of softwood timber decking boards that are pressure treated for durability and outdoor use. Timber is a popular choice thanks to its natural appearance, ease of installation, and affordability.

Softwood decking is ideal for most residential applications and can be stained or painted to match your style. Make sure to order enough boards to cover your area, allowing for cuts and offcuts.

Step 4: Prepare the Ground and Subframe

Clear the area of grass, weeds, or debris, and lay a weed membrane to prevent future growth. Install a solid subframe using treated timber joists, fixed securely into the ground using posts or concrete pads. This frame is the foundation of your decking and must be level and stable to support the boards above.

Step 5: Lay the Decking Boards

Starting at one edge, lay the decking boards perpendicular to your decking joists, leaving small gaps between each board to allow for expansion and drainage. Use galvanised screws or decking clips to fix the boards in place, ensuring they sit flush and securely.

For the best finish, stagger joints where possible and trim edges for a neat, symmetrical result.

Finish and Maintain

Once installed, you can treat or stain your decking to protect it from moisture, UV damage, and general wear. Regular cleaning and occasional resealing will help keep your decking looking fresh and extend its lifespan.
